Bob,

This is excellent advice, and it mirrors my experience in building and growing a company. Having a successful startup is often a grind and requires a commitment to taking small steps that move you toward the bigger goal. And to your example of Facebook, their first goal was to have success at Harvard, not have one billion users.

...Tim

(I was encouraged by Chuck Matthews to check out this site - I have added it to my RSS feed).

Thanks Bob for the great article! This topic kind of reminds me of what we are doing right now with the 'Share Economy'. http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomiogeron/2013/01/23/how-people-make-cash-in-the-share-economy/

I was also excited to read this because it reinforces my belief in giving away free consulting. I often find myself helping friends with web development strategies and never ask for anything. Its awesome when it comes back to you in return as well!

Agree with Bob. A short note - just 2 or 3 lines - sets you apart from email thank-you's which get ignored. And there is a bit of magic opening a hand addressed card vs. all the junk mail you get. I also use Post Cards as a way of connecting. I would send "Skyline Chili" cards back to the marketing folks at Apple in Cupertino when they did something nice for the 'field' and when I would visit them, the picture of a 5-way was tacked to their cube. Great way to keep their mindshare!

I see what you're saying about gifts, but how do you feel about cards? I think they are a nice way to acknowledge a favor and show gratitude. But of course, a card itself is not a "favor," per se.

I think we have more than we had 10 years ago, and think that the more we have, the more we can do. I frequently note that Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and I were all born in 1955, but only one of us graduated from college (should I have taken another path? - probably not or I wouldn't have landed in Cincinnati.) That being said, we can use all the talent we can get -- and Venture for America brings passionate talent -- they just happen to come in the form of recent grads from universities.
